Guidance counsellors say culture clashes – including abuse ...

It is unclear if a generational culture clash played a part in the murder of 16-year-old Aqsa Parvez this week, but GTA schools say they do see immigrant kids torn between home and mainstream Canada.

"These kids are totally caught in the middle. I've had students come to us who have been physically and verbally abused ... yet they tell us it's culturally acceptable for parents to beat them," said Stulberg.

"Girls tell us their brothers follow them in the halls to make sure they're not talking to boys," she said, adding families have sent girls and boys who misbehave "back home to be married."

On the other hand, the veteran counsellor says she feels badly for immigrant parents who see typical teenaged behaviour as blasphemy. "They gave up everything to bring their families here for all the opportunities Western culture can offer, but socially, they expect their children to act as if they're at home."

Stulberg says teachers report cases of suspected abuse to police, but also try to serve as go-betweens with students and their parents, along with two settlement workers.

ViewDate.com Announces World's First Online Speed Dating Service

CUPERTINO, Calif., Oct. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- ViewDate, the world's first website to offer online speed dating services, today announced another free invitation-only dating session on its revolutionary website, http://www.viewdate.com

Connie Jinq, ViewDate's founder, started ViewDate after hearing feedback from frustrated friends who had tried traditional speed dates and online dating. Both seemed promising, but fundamentally flawed. Ms. Jinq realized that these flaws could make meaningful relationships difficult to foster. With the help of her fiancee and friends, ViewDate was created to address these flaws and make to online dating a more personal, enjoyable experience. ViewDate allows users to see and speak to each other in real time over the Internet, and a full-fledged profile, search and messaging system lets them keep in touch between events.

Log on and fall into the arms of your perfect political match

HERE'S some disconcerting news: the most democratic thing you can do this Saturday is let someone else tell you how to vote.

Confused? You needn't be. Last week, the political activist group GetUp! launched a new web page that takes the guesswork out of voting by playing Cupid with citizens and candidates.

The website, www.howshouldivote.com.au works like a computer dating site. Lonely voters simply enter their vital statistics (in this case postcodes rather than chest circumferences), answer a bunch of questions (views on corporate taxes rather than views on athletic Piscean divorcees) and voila: GetUp's crazy love-bug computer sends you the mobile phone numbers of 10 horny housewives in your area ... sorry, I mean a personalised how-to-vote card for the House of Representatives.
